The second week of the Big XII season only features one game, and it’s actually week one for the Big XII team playing this saturday. The game has the 11th ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys hosting Tulsa as HC Mike Gundy will look to start his 16th season at OSU with a win. This game will also be big for preseason heisman candidate Chuba Hubbard. With that preliminary info out of the way let’s look more in depth at these two games.

Ok State Cowboys vs Tulsa Golden Hurricanes

Tylan Wallace

Location: Boon Pickles Stadium in Stillwater, OK.

Start time: 12:00 EST.

Betting Line: OSU -22.5.

It was a very eventful offseason for the Cowboys, and it all revolved around star RB Chuba Hubbard. First was his announcement in January that he would return for his Junior year after many thought he’d head into the NFL as a likely 1st-2nd round pick. Fast forward to the summer and OSU and Chuba were involved in one of the bigger sports-civil rights stories of the year. Hubbard publicly threatened to boycott the season after HC Mike Gundy was seen wearing a far right news network t-shirt. Hubbard’s comments made a huge impact and he quickly got support from current and past OSU players as well as huge figures even outside of sports.

Ultimately Gundy and Hubbard settled the issue through team meetings and statements from Gundy but this will and should continue to be talked about especially in regards to Hubbard. It isn’t easy to go up against one of college football’s most notable coaches (especially when that coach is YOUR coach), but Chuba did it anyway and I’d bet he has the utmost respect from that locker room for his actions this summer. Aside from his outspoken voice outside of sports, he is also the absolute lifeblood of this team, and he will once again carry a huge load this coming season.

Spencer Sanders Oklahoma State

Last season, Tulsa finished with the 90th ranked rushing defense in college football. Last year, OSU led college football in rushing yards. That spells danger for the Golden Hurricanes this week. In addition to the run game problems the Tulsa defense will face, they will also have the challenge of stopping WR Tylan Wallace, who is coming back to school after tearing his ACL last season. Wallace is a bonafide stud and probably would have been a 1st-2nd round pick had he not gotten hurt last year. Wallace has also been using this offseason to grow his connection with QB Spencer Sanders, who despite lack of experience had a pretty good season last year.

The spread for this game is huge and it’s for good reason. I don’t see much coming from this Tulsa offense on Saturday. Safety Kolby Harvell-Peel is set up for a huge year and I can see a scenario where he ends up with an interception or two against Tulsa QB Zach Smith. The bottom line in this game is, OSU’s run and pass offense will likely be too much for Tulsa to handle and I don’t see the Golden Hurricanes offense doing enough to keep up. I have the Cowboys starting 1-0 with a final score of 44-10 and my player of the game is RB Chuba Hubbard. I see him starting his junior campaign with a 150+ yards game and 2 touchdowns.
